BULLETBOYS
From The Skies

Frontiers Records 2018

BULLETBOYS have returned with a new album titled From Out OF The Skies. For those keeping track it’s been 3 years since the release of their previous record Elefante. If you have been following BULLETBOYS post-Zsa Zsa you know that the sound has evolved into a ‘contemporary rock’ with an ‘alternative' spin. While it's not for everyone, you have to credit [frontman/guitarist] Marq Torien for moving the band forward and modernizing the band’s sound and image.

Since the theme with BULLETBOYS is keeping things current, Torien enlisted the help of hipster and rock ‘n' roll big mouth Jesse Hughes from EAGLES OF DEATH METAL on “D-Evil”, which was the first track issued to radio. The combination of Hughes and Torien works relatively well, though the collaboration didn't really set the world on fire. From Out Of The Skies, while not a throwback record, is still very much chock full of melodic, catchy and hook heavy tunes. Torien’s vocals are still as powerful as ever, a strong point of the band and the album. There are some over the top performances on From Out Of The Skies where I found myself cringing a bit since a little of that goes a long way.

My personal favorites on From Out Of The Skies are the slower, softer moments; “Hi-Fi Drive By” which is 90s alternative meets psychedelic rock and “Losing End Again”, a refreshing all acoustic ballad. All in all, From Out Of The Skies is a respectable collection of songs that aren't forced or contrived. I had to do a double take when I saw that From Out Of The Skies was released by Frontiers Records, which is notorious for asking artists on their rosters to ‘write albums that are 80s’. Kudos to Torien for sticking to his guns.
