The Dream Theater/King's X/Joe Satriani show at the Greek Theater was definitely amazing! The show began at about 6:30 p.m. with King's X opening up. They performed a short set, but they probably gained alot of new fans with their performance. They definitely sound better live and they can really keep a groove going.
Dream Theater gave us a good show, but is did not measure up to the last time they came around here at the Wiltern Theater. They played over 3 hours at the Wiltern and the sound was much better than at the Greek. Often times, James Labrie's mic did not function and the fans could not hear the lyrics over the guitar and keyboards. But they still rocked anyway in traditional Dream Theater fashion! John Myung's bass playing was very involved and Doug Pinnick from King's X came out to sing on a track off of
Falling to Infinity. This was cool because he also accompanies on the album. Another treat was that Dream Theater played songs that they did not cover at the Wiltern Theater. This really shows how much they care about their fans. They definitely know what the fans want! They didn't come back out after they finished their set, which was probably already agreed upon (since they weren't closing the show). Anyway, the majority of the crowd was there to see Joe Satriani, so the crowd was not as good it could have been. The fans booed when they began replacing the Dream Theater set.
I did not care about seeing Joe Satriani and was prepared to leave early. I was so impressed I stayed ‘til the end. Satch is amazing to watch live and if you don't dig solo guitar artists, you just might after see Satch. The new material from Strange Beautiful Music was definitely strange. His earlier stuff got a better response from the crowd. The place was packed after the Satch arrived onstage and stayed that way ‘til the closing of the show.
I was disappointed that Joe Satriani and John Petrucci didn't begin to duel it out. It would have been cool to see G2!!
