Producer Kevin Shirley (currently working with Iron Maiden) has been posting daily journals of the band’s progress on their forthcoming album. This particular session produced some interesting material which may turn up in the future: "We started the day [Tuesday, February 4th] trying to recut this tune of Steve [Harris] and Dave [Murray]’s which we were busy with on Monday, but Bruce [Dickinson] wasn't in, and the guys found it difficult to play without hearing the vocals. So... we took a break and they had a jam, a very rare occurrence for the band, and they got way funky too!!!!!! MAIDEN!!!!!! Yes sirree Bob!! And I recorded them, 4 jams in total, so look for them as B-sides somewhere down the track, and if you think they just throw-away tracks, you are mistaken - they may not be 'songs' as such, but you'll get a rare insight into their musicianship. Things got even sillier when Nicko [McBrain] (whilst doing some voices for a video-thingy) sang over a take of the previous day's song, without knowing the melody, and it is a riot!”

Independents unite! The independent record trade associations of Australia (AIR), Canada (CIRPA) and the UK (AIM) have joined forces in a global partnership to create the World Independent Network (WIN), which will jointly represent music sales of up to $7.5B. The US and European associations, AFIM and IMPALA, have already committed to join the network, and other independent trade associations are being contacted to join. WIN exists to improve business networking opportunities between its members, enabling independents around the world to communicate and deal with each other. WIN's first initiative is to create a worldwide network of market resources which member labels can access, enabling them to better identify and contact partners in the territories represented. This will include a searchable database of member labels, industry statistics and information on charts, magazines, directories, web sites and events. David Williams, AIR's Chairman says, "Over the last three years we've seen AIR grow from 20 labels to 200 labels. That growth has been mirrored by the development of AIM in the UK and Impala in Europe. The formation of WIN extends those national networks to the world. Of course it's great for independent labels, but its also fantastic for anybody who likes music. It opens up the world for independent music."

Ex-AC/DC bass player Mark Evans was scheduled to be included in AC/DC’s Rock N’ Roll Hall of Fame induction, but was snubbed at the last minute. A press release on Evans’ behalf is as follows: “Sydney's Sunday Sun-Herald newspaper reported an unprecedented backflip by the U.S. Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. It was proudly announced by the Hall of Fame on November 7th, 2002 that all current members of seminal blues-rock outfit 'AC/DC' plus foundation members Mark Evans (bass) and Bon Scott (vocals) would be inducted in March 2003. It was revealed today by Sunday Sun-Herald journalist Peter Holmes that in an unprecedented move the Hall of Fame has now retracted the nomination of Mark Evans. Despite his work featured on four classic albums released by the band (TNT, Dirty Deeds, Let There be Rock and High Voltage US release) that have amassed an amazing 30 million sales worldwide, Mark was offered no explanation for this astonishing turn around. Suzan Evans, Executive Director of the Hall of Fame, stated just prior to Christmas that Mark's inclusion, and the fact that this was widely publicized by the Hall of Fame since early November, was 'an error'. Many requests for clarification of this statement and an explanation of the extraordinary actions by the Hall of Fame have met with no success. The extreme embarrassment and personal hurt that this has caused Mark is obvious. We urge any admirers of the band to implore industry and media contacts to lobby the Hall of Fame in an attempt to have this situation rectified. Further, anyone in direct contact with the band should make them aware of this erroneous decision. They should be encouraged to bring pressure to bare on the board of the Hall of Fame so that Mark's nomination can be reinstated and he can take his rightful position alongside Bon & the current members.”

Sammy Hagar has the following sketchy message: “Lookout! There's an exciting announcement coming soon! The message from Sammy is: Redheads, Don't think that the announcement that is coming soon has to do with Van Halen. Stay Tuned!” –Sammy
