Cristina Scabbia - “Trust me this is a Delirium you will feel the need to be part of!”

LACUNA COIL released their 8th studio album Delirium in late May. The last release in 2014, Broken Crown Halo was a huge success, as all of their albums have been. It charted well on U.S. Billboards and was well received in the metal community. This band has toured with Ozzfest and been direct support to bands such as MEGADETH, DEVILDRIVER, NINE INCH NAILS, LAMB OF GOD, SYSTEM OF A DOWN, along with Ozzy Osbourne and Rob Zombie, plus countless others. Delirium has hit the U.S. market with a tremendous force. It almost immediately peaked at #1 on iTunes metal chart, on Billboard 200 it hit at #33 and on Top hard rock U.S. albums #2!

Delirium was the beginning of a new era for the LACUNA COIL camp, so to speak. This album was the first to be recorded and produced without long time members Cristiano “Criz” Mozzati on drums and guitarist Cris 'Pizza' Migliore, whom both elected to retire on Valentine’s Day 2014. Shortly before these two left, guiatrist Marco “Maus” Biazzi made his exit. Quite frankly Ryan Blake Folden - drums and newest member Diego Cavallotti - guitar are a breath of fresh air to the LC family. Vocalist Andrea Ferro has mentioned that he and the rest of the band “believe this to be their heaviest and most intense album yet.” They had complete control of the production. Longtime member and bassist Marco Coti Zelati was named producer after all his work and contributions, putting his heart and soul into this project. This album is alss the first LC album to be fully produced in Italy. It was recorded in Milano at BRX studios. Because of the quick departure of the previous guitarist, the band was joined by fellow musicians as support in the studio. Myles Kennedy of ALTER BRIDGE and Mark Vollelunga of NOTHING MORE were a couple to name.

Delirium conceptually is based on mental illness and being in a sanitarium. This album is a 44 minute ride on the crazy train. Each song is based on different mental issues we face on a day to day basis. Not to throw stones on anyone facing or dealing with mental illness, but I think it’s safe to say a mass majority of us deal with it, either personally or with friends and family; Depression, self-hate, insecurities, shame etc.

Lyrically this album is phenomenal. Out of the 11 tracks on this album there is not one that you won’t want to listen to. The title track "Delirium" is a great exposition of the entire album. Track #1, "House Of Shame" is a beautiful mix of operatic, hard core metal that punches you from the start. Ferro kicks you in the teeth with his hard vocals right after the soft intro. Scabbia breaks in with her melodic vocals and the double bass drum along with the guitar and bass…holy hell. It's forcibly undeniable that this track is new life for the band. Track #7, "You Love Me ‘Cause I Hate You" goes as far as to dive into Stockholm Syndrome. So many issues in this album are relatable. "My Demons" says “I feel fucked up today”. I love the honesty and elucidation in the lyrics of this album.

If you’ve never listened to LACUNA COIL, do yourself a favor and listen to Delirium, you will be missing a metal masterpiece if you don’t. This album is an unquestionable exegesis narrative on insanity, the daily struggle of mental illness brought to the surface in an unapologetic way. By far one of the best albums I’ve listened to and connected with.
