Opening Night for KISS & Aeros

REVIEW BY: Vinny Boom Botz

I’ll keep this short and sweet ‘cuz I know everyone’s busy.

Opening the show was Saliva. No comment as we totally blew them off and tailgated in the steamy parking lot absolutely packed with people ranging in age from about 12 to 60 from the looks of it! The beer was cold and the doobies were rolled so the night definitely started off on the right foot.

Kiss came on right around 8pm and they sounded great. I mean, you know what you’re going to get with them after all these years and they rarely fail to disappoint even though this is their 7,466 “farewell tour”! Opening with “Detroit Rock City,” Kiss played for about an hour and a half and ran through a killer set of classics, including “I Want You,” “100,000 Years,” “King of the Nighttime World,” “Do You Love Me,” “Black Diamond” and ended with “Rock and Roll All Night.” As usual, their stage show was over the top and about the only bummer was the fact that Ace wasn’t there. I bet half the crowd couldn’t tell anyway!

Aerosmith was supposed to take the stage shortly thereafter but did not come on until almost 10:20. They then proceeded to play a short set of only about an hour and 10 minutes. Not only that, but they hit us over the freakin’ head with their newer shi$*$ such as “Jaded,” “Love in an Elevator,” “What it Takes,” “Rag Doll,” and the most horrendous live tune they could possibly play, “Don’t Want to Miss A Thing.” I certainly wanted to miss that tune, so we took the opportunity to hit the bathrooms. Many people talking at the show were disappointed that they didn’t play more of their old stuff, especially since they did a ton of it when they were here in Sept. 2002 with Kid Rock and DMC. Tyler struggled throughout the set with his lyrics and their overall sound wasn’t as crisp and clear as Kiss’ set. Maybe it was just a case of opening night technical difficulties but since they were only in town for one night, we could give a shit about that!

Supposedly, this venue has an 11:00pm curfew, which, due to Kiss taking longer than expected to breakdown, Aerosmith would never have met. We snuck down towards the front and it looked like Tyler was pissed off the whole show. Then, at the end of the show when Aerosmith was playing “Sweet Emotion,” there was someone off stage that must’ve been telling the band that they had to shut down and Tyler was yelling at him the whole time he wasn’t singing! They didn’t do any encore either because of this so all in all it was pretty lame.

Here are the set lists, definitely in no particular order and probably with a few omissions too…
