Arch Enemy Live at the House o

Arch Enemy are metal practitioners. They rock. They are often overlooked in a swamp of bands that are “Nu-Metal” this or “This Kind of Metal” that. If one has to take it under the microscope and reason away ad nauseum… then have at it. There’s too much fun to be had popping a new disc into the player and giving it a go for the first time. Like it or chuck it. So what if the new Queens of the Bicycle Seat Whiffing Club CD wasn’t as good as their debut, when the former singer, who choked on a ham sandwich was with the band. It’s guaranteed that’s someone is absolutely loving it, banging their heads, or wondering if the ballad is going to be played at their wedding. That’s why life is so cool (Did I offend the Death Rocker?) – YOU GET TO CHOOSE! Confirm or deny. So compare apples to apples or Limp Bizkits to Triscuits, but live and let live, dig?

In support of Cradle of Filth, Bleeding Through and HIMSA on the MTV2 Headbangers Ball Tour, Sweden’s Arch Enemy rip, tore, and lacerated us with their savagely healing performance at the House of Blues, Animalheim. The beautiful crowd of heavy music heathens packed the House like a bag of Swedish Fish (the can of sardines saying is old and it stinks). When Arch Enemy hit the stage the sound was perfect, and the way the band looked in their destroy mode was stunning, particularly Angela Gossow. She’s a singer, a great singer, even if her delivery seems like a pharyngeal overload. She worked the stage with aggression, while drummer Daniel Erlandsson and bassist Sharlee D’Angelo laid down a thunderous, yet precise and desultory rhythm. This was accentuated and heightened by the Amott brothers’ incredible guitar work. Michael and Christopher Amott’s approach to guitar is refreshing. Watching and hearing them live is spectacular. A sound and method comparable to Mustaine and Friedman is obvious, with speed and precision bleeding all over beautifully. It’s certain that Perry and Whitford would lose their shit if and when they hear the Amott’s axemanship. Can you imagine Arch Enemy doing “Draw The Line?”

Erlandsson’s drumming: Breathtaking.. Indescribable, really.

Their live sound is as good as any band, be it arena or small venue. It’s apparent that they love what they do. Did anyone catch them during the Iron Maiden “Dance of Death” tour last year? Too bad the Anaheim show this year had such a short set. The songs played were from Wages of Sin and Anthems of Rebellion. I was hoping to hear them do their cover of Megadeth’s “Symphony of Destruction,” from their new EP Dead Eyes See No Future.

The band moved the crowd into a frenzy with the energy they gave away every second of the show. They ripped it apart with “Ravenous,” but unfortunately that was their last song of the night. I hope they headline soon in The States soon. A short set doesn’t do a band like Arch Enemy justice or their loving followers, for that matter. Check them out if you never have.

“There is a principle which is a bar against all information, which is proof against all arguments and which cannot fail to keep a man in everlasting ignorance-that principle is contempt prior to investigation.” -Herbert Spencer

Go see them.
