Throwin' Rocks at the Glasshou

Being banned from The Forum in Los Angeles because they once called their band Burn the Priest, and not being able to play that stadium show with touring mates Slipknot and Shadows Fall wasn't going to keep Lamb of God from getting on a stage somewhere on a Saturday night. They were wound, loaded and ready to fire on the several hundred lucky headbangers who were to attend a small club show at Pomona's The Glass House with Fireball Ministry as their opening act. Incidentally, Fireball Ministry is an unsavory name for a band – Ban them from The Forum, too! One must be careful to not listen to any of this music backwards because every song is satanically saturated.

Did you hear about the priest who liked punishing his bishop?

When Lamb of God took the stage after Fireball Ministry, they broke out hard with Laid to Rest. Randy Blythe took a dive way off and out from the stage, disappearing into the moving wave of bodies, screaming out the song with glass breaking pitch and intensity, and then emerged out of the crowd and ran back on to the stage. At one point in the show Randy told the audience how glad he was able to do the show at the smaller venue. He said (about The Forum owners/partners), “Apparently they didn't like us. We weren't wholesome enough. But, this is way better.” He meant it.

At so many different parts of their set, the music defied my limited understanding. How does Chris Adler play drums like that? How does Randy rip out “Now you've got something to die for” in his powerful screaming delivery, and then finish the other ten songs with the same vocal level and quality? How do Willie, John, and Mark keep the badass string section so balanced, together, and do it with such radical aplomb?

Lamb of God are liking what they do, delivering the New American Gospel, and burning a priest now and then. Catch them this summer.

Thanks to Fireball Ministry for their great performance and easygoing, fun attitude. They rock hard.
