Case Closed In Altamont Stabbing By Newsferatu, Writer Thursday, May 26, 2005 @ 6:32 PM
36 years later, the "second assailant" mystery is solved.
After a two-year long renewed investigation into the stabbing death of Meredith Hunter, the Alameda County Sheriff's Department has closed the case once and for all.
The investigation was re-opened when it was thought that a second, unidentified member of the Hell's Angel motorcycle gang (whom the Rolling Stones had hired for security for the Altamont show documented in the film Gimme Shelter) may also have assaulted Hunter.
Investigators concluded that the stabbing was in self-defense after Alan Passaro (the Angel that stabbed Hunter) saw Hunter pointing a gun at the stage.
Investigators reviewed that footage in slow-motion to see not only the gun, but that Passaro had acted alone in stabbing Hunter to death.
Altamont, with an attendance of over 300,000 people, was seen as the "Woodstock of the West" on Dec. 6, 1969, but the stabbing death instead helped bring a close to the "Hippie" era.
