At the Key Club

Anthrax played to a sold-out crowd at the Key Club Sunday May 22, 2005. Now, I've seen Anthrax at least a dozen times, each of them kickass. But never with Joey Belladonna. (I tried to on the ill-fated tour about 5 years ago when he backed out, but that's another story.)

I knew this show was going to be special, yet for some reason I didn't buy tickets early. However, I knew there was a reason why I found myself standing outside of the Key Club with about 50 other people, smoking way too many Salems & trying to look cool.

Just as I was about to leave, I scored a ticket for cheaper than face value (a lesson kids: never be discouraged by sold out shows, you can always get tix if you know how to read people.) I got in just as the movie was starting, a VH1 "Behind the Music" mostly focusing on the old lineup of Anthrax. They also played the Married with Children episode featuring the boys from NYC in it's entirety (remember that?) The Bundy kids won a contest to have 'Thrax come play at their house & they got snowed in. The band was really bored & refused to play, until they got hungry & ate some psychedelic leftovers in the fridge. Then they ripped into "In My World". Oh yeah & Marcy the neighbor was hitting on them. This had the whole crowd roaring with laughter.

So anyway, after the movie, Joey Belladonna, Scott Ian, Charlie Benante, Frank Bello & Danny Spitz rushed onstage & proceeded to blow everyone away. They sounded so tight, you would never believe that they hadn't played live together in 13 years!

Set list (in order, but missing a few cuz I was drunk):

  • Among the Living
  • Got the Time
  • Caught in a Mosh
  • Antisocial
  • NFL
  • In My World
  • Deathrider
  • I'm the Man
  • Metal Thrashing Mad
  • Indians
Encore:
  • Tribute to Dimebag: "A New Level" (hell yeah a very touching moment & everyone in the house went wild)
  • I Am the Law

They played a lot more songs in there, but I was just a bit intoxicated. Which continued at the Rainbow after I ran into Carol's friend Paul from Digitech. He usually can get ya backstage but the bouncers were Nazi's so I had to settle for a pic on stage with Joey's "Indians" headdress.

Anthrax will be back in the fall with the original lineup, and trust me, they are "NOT!" to be missed.
