Uncross those arms, get your back off the wall and kill the gatekeeper of your mind.

Now, stop reading this review and take a leap of faith and do what I’m about to tell you. Not for me, but for you. And for the undying commitment you made to heavy music when you logged on to KNAC.COM and back when you threw horns for the very first time.

Go get A Silent Protest, a new CD from a low-key (and high intensity) Los Angeles band called Trigger Point. If you are not willing to do this then I’d bet my ball bag that you’re the type to scroll down below to the Reader Rants section and start spewing your hater smack.

Are you still with it? Okay, let’s get to the review.

The title track “A Silent Protest” is a bruiser of a song. It moves along with crunchy guitar riffs, machine-gun drumming and a wicked, throbbing bass line. After several bars singer Taylor Wallace lights the thing up with a sonorous, yet distinctive voice, belting out what seems like his true-life account of heartbreak and living with the fucked up reality of unresolved business.

Dare I say, but “Picking up the Pieces” has a radio quality in its sound and accessibility. I heard that it is getting airplay, as a good song should.

“Away” is a cranium crusher and again showcases TP’s venom spitting singer Wallace telling us that it’s rough –he’s absolutely raging on this one. The drumming from Dave Gentry is phenomenal.

On his “Final Breath” -- this is a haunting piece of music that clocks in at about two minutes. Its cello and piano arrangement add contrast to a record that would do fine sans strings and keys. Adding this short instrumental was a smart move artistically in the dimension, depth and to the mood it gives the whole album. Somehow it smoothly fades into the “The Color of Real”, a much harder and metallically charged song. A seemingly uncanny pairing of songs that works together well somehow.

“The Last Laugh” is the last track and the emotional apex (and bottom) of the record: a great piece of music.

There is diversity and thoughtfulness in both the composition of the music and the lyrics on this record. While a conditioned response to initially hearing Trigger Point might be to say that they are just another Nu Metal band, which is understandable. I, too, am guilty of this kind of contempt prior to investigation. These days there are so many poops being shot out the shit chute that we’re all a bit jaded when it comes to another band on a small label …or any new music for that matter.

A Silent Protest is a killer record, loaded with good songs. You will not hear one real guitar solo, which is a pisser, but guitarist Mike Bashur holds up in the power chord department and certainly has it in him to let a good solo rip. The musicianship, songwriting, and overall attitude of the four members in Trigger Point shine on this one. While it may not fly off the record store shelves it is certainly not a record to be shelved or overlooked. Play it. LOUD!
