Great White - Station Fire Update: Judge Sets Trial Date For Defendant By Newsferatu, Writer Tuesday, March 14, 2006 @ 1:19 PM
A judge on Tuesday set a July trial date for one of the two owners of a nightclub where 100 people died in a 2003 fire.
The trial of Michael Derderian is scheduled for July 31 in Kent County, where the nightclub was located, Superior Court Judge Francis J. Darigan Jr. said. Though much of the pretrial proceedings have taken place in Providence, "this is a Kent County case," Darigan said in announcing the trial date. Derderian and his brother, Jeffrey, are each charged with 200 counts of involuntary manslaughter in the Feb. 20, 2003 fire at The Station nightclub in West Warwick. The fire began when sparks from a rock band's pyrotechnics ignited flammable soundproofing foam inside the club.
A third defendant, former Great White tour manager Daniel Biechele, pleaded guilty last month to 100 counts of involuntary manslaughter for setting off the pyrotechnics without a permit. He is scheduled to be sentenced in the spring and faces a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison. Jeffrey Derderian is expected to be tried after his brother. No trial date has been announced for him.
