The band takes a break from Gi

Decided to catch Into Eternity the day before Gigantour hit town due to they were dropped from the Phoenix bill along with Sancity and the Smashup. Figured if Mustaine hand picked them for Gigantour like he does all the bands, they gotta be pretty good. Sorry to say, that does mean I haven’t caught them live before.

I got a couple of surprises I wasn’t expecting. First off, the club. The parking lot was tiny and once inside the club, it took me awhile to believe that a band playing on Gigantour would be playing here. This place was small.

The next surprise was actually worth the trip. With Into Eternity not hitting the stage until 11:15, I got the unusual pleasure of catching one of the opening bands, Triplever. These guys were good. Real good. They had my attention for the full set, which as you know is rare for an opening band. They hit the stage with Beyond the Grave, Jackhammer and Militia. By now the floor was packed, pushing up against the stage and raising all sorts of hell. The crowd’s reaction was unbelievable. By the time the band went through Wasted, Bloodshed, Merchants of Chaos, Without Warning and finished the set with Purgatory the mosh pits hadn’t tired once. And everyone was moshing – even the chicks. And I’m not talking about those “is that a guy or a chick?” types either. The chicks were holding their own. It was truly impressive. At one point the bigger guys formed an outer barrier so the chicks could do their own thing. When was the last time you saw that happen?? While I literally sat amazed at the performance as the band left the stage, I honestly couldn’t help but think – “why haven’t these guys been on the second stage at Ozzfest yet?”. They could easily explode off the second stage like so many other bands before them. Any one in the Phoenix area needs to look for these guys in December when they release their new CD through Vibe Merchant Records. You’re not going to be disappointed.

Finally, Into Eternity gets on stage and lets loose. By the time the band finished the first song, it dawns on me ….half the crowd has left. HALF. I thought I would be walking in to a IE crowd from everything I have heard about them, but I was wrong. Now remember - this was just an observation. I’m not knocking the band at all. IE was tight, they were good and they roared. They played a few tracks off their upcoming CD (such as Severe Emotional Distress and Timeless Winter), their musicianship was stellar …but honestly, they just didn’t seem to carry the momentum that Triplever built up. It could be just one of those things – maybe it was the club, maybe because it was the Tuesday night 11:15 stage time, maybe it was the off night …who knows. Good thing was, the band didn’t care. They played as if there were 20,000 people there, and it definitely showed. Lead singer Stu Block commanded the stage and put everything he had in to each and every song.

Regardless of how this show went, you should get out and see them on Gigantour. You will be glad you did.

No prob Mummy. This particular show did have a little more crowd information than I normally put, but honestly, you had to see it. The part about the chicks - when has anyone seen chicks mosh in their own circle? With BIG guys surrounding them so they can do their thing? I never have! It was pretty amazing. Again, for this review, I thought that said something major about the band. Now this isn't underminding your thoughts on the 'third' person review Mummy, but you can see my point for this review. I'm just admitting this review had a little more because I thought it called for it. Now just so you know Mummy, I will still have crowd stuff in my reviews, it just won't always be so much lol \m/

joepa13 - 9/20/2006 12:39:37 PM
i'd say the reviewer did well, usually the description of the crowd, if any, tells how good the bands were to get them to move or involved. what else is there to say, rocker #1 banged his head while in a metal stance then ran over to the other side of the stage while rocker #2 banged his head...

Mummyman - 9/20/2006 5:59:04 AM
CrpnDeth: You're a class act...Thanks for listening \m/

CrpnDeth - 9/19/2006 7:03:39 PM
...toned down ....

CrpnDeth - 9/19/2006 7:02:58 PM
I totally get Mummy's point. I can see where he is coming from. Maybe reviews 'could' be toned done a bit regarding the crowd. When I write a live review, I try to write it from walking in the door to walking out - the whole gig. The crowd is a big part of that. True, I didn't pay to see the crowd lol But still, for me, its an entire atmosphere of the event.

tatedforlife - 9/19/2006 8:37:27 AM
thats really strange to hear, because when i saw them with amorphis, everyone at the galaxy theatre in santa ana, well, over half of the crowd was there to se IE. they were stellar. the band sounded like they were fresh off of the shelf, and even withthe new band members, the overtone was incindeary. they put on one of the best musical performances that ive seen in years. excellent band live, and if you EVER get the opportunity to see them- do it. you wont be disappointed.

Mummyman - 9/19/2006 12:26:00 AM
Joepa13: Thanks for the geography lesson, but i've been to Phoenix and i've even been to Glendale and that's great that they've got a new stadium for the Cards to play in, perhaps you should run for city counsel. As it turns out you're right!....Phoenix is huge...Who knew....but Bulldogz, the venue in question...isn't.In big cities most people find other ways to entertain themselves..This show was on a Monday I believe...slow night overall i'd imagine...But I digress.... Look, the bottom line is Crpndeth wrote his review, he liked the opener apparently more than the headliner...i'm good with that....To each his fucking own...I'd just like to have the band reviewed instead of the reviewer reviewing the crowd reviewing the band. nothing more nothing less

joepa13 - 9/18/2006 5:57:02 PM
Triplever is the real deal. This review by KNAC seemed to be more about them than Into Eternity. Into Eternity kicks some ass, but for the writer of this article to give such props to Triplever, that must mean it was a good fucken show. Even though Glendale is a smaller town out here, if you've been to Phoenix, you would know Glendale is just part of the greater Phoenix area and no matter where it was out here, there would be a good following. Arizona Cardinals just opened a Stadium in Gleandale and they sold out the entire season. What does that tell you mummyman. Phoenix is huge.

Mummyman - 9/17/2006 10:18:50 PM
Crpn: My point is simply this.....If i'm going to read a review of any given band's performance i'd like the performance to be reviewed as the meat and potatoes if you will of the review, not filtered through the third person perspective of how they thought the attendees of the show gauged the performance. It seems to me that the majority of the reviews are written this way where the band is a side note to the audience. By the way I never heard of Triplever either, but a 10 second google search told me everything I needed to know. Just my opinion

CrpnDeth - 9/17/2006 5:55:20 PM
Didn't go to Tool Swynger. But I'll tell Jerry you're thinking about his balls.

CrpnDeth - 9/17/2006 5:54:34 PM
Not always mummy. I've seen local bands booed off the stage more times than praised. Hell I had never even heard of the band Triplever until that night. A crowd's reaction is in direct relation to a bands performance. Of course they played well, why wouldn't they - its usually the same songs every night. But if the crowd is falling asleep, or playing pool or whatever (not that they were for IE) wouldn't that say something about the performance?

SWYNGER - 9/17/2006 5:50:29 PM
I am surprised Crpndeth hasnt done a review of the Tool show from last week. But stay tuned folks I am sure he will be all over Jerry Cantrell's balls when AIC comes thru town.

Mummyman - 9/17/2006 10:03:49 AM
I'm real fucking tired of reading through what's supposed to be a review of a band's live performance but getting a review of the CROWD instead. The KNAC reviewers seem to all get overly involved in the "lets spend alot of time on the crowd bit" instead of the in's & out's of what the band did and didn't do from a performance standpoint..... Yeah,Yeah I know, The crowd's reaction does influence the overall experience but give me a goddamn break Glendale, AZ. is a fairly small city with about 200K people and the demographic of who's gonna show up at this hole in the wall gig has gotta be fairly small to start with. Secondly, Triplever is FROM Arizona so OF COURSE they're gonna get the bigger reaction. Jesus Christ! does anyone do research anymore. Aside from that Totems is right!

Totems - 9/16/2006 7:36:49 AM
The time I saw them very disappointed, could it be that is becuse 3, 5th of the band have quit and Stu sucks.

The_Space_Lord - 9/15/2006 7:30:15 PM
Stupid fucking always-stalling Enter button for posting that twice.
