The Banished By Sin Tour Desecrates Venue 1720

I find myself back at the slum that I refer to as "skid-row adjacent" and the venue known as 1720 for what was sure to be a bible-bashing good time. After all, I wouldn't come to this part of town for just any show, certainly not for locals, hell no. DEICIDE and some of the most Brutal Death Metal in that of KRISIUN, this was a night where the Metals were performed with great execution. Along with some other outstanding acts INFERI and CLOAK, the BANISHED BY SIN Tour headed by Florida's iconic Legends was a solid bill worthy of the drive into one of the worse locations in Los Angeles.

CLOAK is a 4-piece band from Atlanta, Georgia who had a tall order to fill, earning the responsibility of opening this insane package every night. On the heels of their recent 2023 release Black Flame Eternal (Season Of Mist), their Blackend-Groove sound entertained the incoming crowd just enough not to get torn to shreds by the DEICIDE/KRISIUN cult following. This young band is showing promise in the Black Metal genre and people did appreciate their efforts, throwing back the horns to the band for that half-hour of their time. A band more suited for a Black Metal line-up, they are doing exactly that having hit several Cvlt Black Metal Fests, and many of the other big ones in Europe where they will return to after this run where no doubt they will be more appreciated and welcomed back upon their return the states and L.A.

For a hard shift in gears, then came INFERI whose 2014's release The Path Of Apotheosis broke my neck when I first heard it. I can't recall that I had ever seen them until tonight. Guitarist/Bassist Malcom Pugh, who is all that remains of that line-up, pushed to maintain the extreme Tech-Death sound from then. It became quickly evident that the people in attendance weren't the ideal crowd for the Technical barrage. I often describe bands like this as a 'musician's band'. The writing is more for those musician's who care more about (music) theory and less about simply being a 'music fan' and the groove or catchy riffs that grabs the listener. Be that as it may, they're definitely great at what they do and eventually after a few expensive (as f*ck) beers and a few songs later, the people stared to show some movement in the pit.. Judging by the crowd's increased intensity, the later songs in their half-hour set seemed to really go over well. When 'core breakdown riffs hit, you'll tend to get some good reaction.

To me, KRISIUN has always been one of those bands that exudes brutality and is so humble and appreciative of the response they get from their crowds. The brothers from Brazil have been bringing their 'black force, armageddon conquering, ageless carnage, assassinating bloodshed' since the very early 90's. The brutal power trio is coming off the success of their recent release Mortem Solis' (2022, Century Media) threw down for an intense 45 minute set that set the crowd on fire, opening up with "Kings Of Killing" from 1998's Apocalyptic Revelation. Already hitting us with that Old School Death Metal, at that point it was FKN on! What everyone came for, pure brutality was being unleashed in the pit and KRISIUN, who played hard and played fast, provided the soundtrack. They closed it out in the most brutal way with their debut hit, "Black Force Domain" and the crowd and pit had the same energy as when they started. Unrelenting, giving it their all and right back to a very appreciative KRISIUN.

KRISIUN setlist:

  • "Kings Of Killing"
  • "Ravager"
  • "Hatred Inherit"
  • "Scourge Of The Enthroned"
  • "Necronomical"
  • "Serpent Messiah"
  • "Apocalyptic Victory"
  • "Black Force Domain"
Undeniably, DEICIDE is one of the most evil bands alive. A band with a f*ck-all attitude and rabid fanbase only furthers this belief and the crowd this night is more proof of that. Opening their set with "When Satan Rules His World", their enormous sound filled the room with energy that set the pit on fire. As intimidating Singer/Bassist Glen Benton comes across, he's also humble, apologizing a few songs in due to feeling a little less than 100% (thanks Fresno). Nevertheless, he still was poised to give 666% just as the crowd did. Erupting more and more after every song, but once this 6 note punches hits on "Once Upon The Cross" intro, things got more intense just as it got more packed in the pit making it a tad difficult to go around, the metalheads were walking more than running.

Just as on the recent record, their sound tonight sounded massive and credit on both aspects given to Jeramie Kilng, who I happened to catch outside and give a fist-bump to, has been manning the board for DEICIDE for a good minute. He's got the band's sound dialed in tight and to a(n upside down) t. Having chatted with both Glen and Steve Asheim about the band, they both agree that they are firing on all cylinders and have a great team right now making DEICIDE sound the best they ever have. Such an awesome accomplishment over many decades is a true testament to the Death Metal genre they help spawn. Hearing the crowd singing along and chanting "ONCE UPON THE CROSS!!", and "FATHER... SATAN!!" was so fulfilling to hear, as there are few Death Metal bands that can actually have a crowd singing along. Again, due to Glen feeling a little haggard, decided it best to cut a couple of songs from the set which I noticed as I stood side stage and could see the setlist in front of me. Closing out their set (I included the setlist below) with "Homage For Satan", a song which has become a staple closer to their amazing shows, the legion on the floor was just as intense if not more as the night was coming to a close, having no care that it was hosted at a "shithole" (see DEICIDE's last post), DEICIDE owned Los Angeles this night and killed it once again.

I need to give a shoutout to Winter and Jesse over at Tony's Saloon just a couple of miles away, a total ideal spot to pre(and post)-game for a show. Always friendly and welcome you with a shot (try the mezcal), a great spot to get your buzz on and not have to shell out $15 for an overpriced beer at the venue.

DEICIDE setlist:

  • "When Satan Rules His World"
  • "Carnage In The Temple Of The Damned"
  • "Bury The cross.. With Your Christ"
  • "Behead The Prophet"
  • "Once Upon The Cross"
  • "From Unknown Heights You Shall Fall"
  • "Sacrificial Suicide"
  • "Woke From God"
  • "Satan Spawn, The Caco Daemon"
  • "Sever The Tongue"
  • "In Hell I Burn"
  • "Children Of The Underworld"
  • "Dead By Dawn "
  • "Homage For Satan"
