MOTLEY CRUE Dr. Feelgood Limited Edition 35th Anniversary Deluxe Box Set With Unboxing Video By Charlie Steffens aka Gnarly Charlie, Writer/Photographer Thursday, December 5, 2024 @ 11:11 AM
When we started this band, all we needed
First they took Hollywood. Then they took the world. Their success wasn't by a lucky break, by any means. With a gimmick that went beyond heavy metal expectations, their music was infectious-loud, exciting, full of guitar, with explosive rhythm. A four-piece, snarling rock n' roll beast. The singer, the only (bleach) blond-haired member of the group, had a catchy, androgynous persona, with a commanding upper register voice like no other frontman in the rock scene. Move over, David Lee Roth!
The aforementioned band, MOTLEY CRUE, featured Vince Neil on lead vocals, Mick Mars on guitar, Nikki Sixx on bass, and Tommy Lee on drums. Having formed in 1981, the CRUE's fame and fortune was hard won, beginning with homemade posters stapled to utility poles along the Sunset Strip; they cut their teeth playing clubs in Los Angeles-Gazzarri's, the Starwood, the Troubadour, and Whisky a Go Go. Yet, it would only be a couple years of DIY'ing it until Neil, Sixx, Mars, and Lee would become bonafide rockstars, in a band that would become widely known for being brash and bawdy, with an incomparable live show. They begged, borrowed, and stole while living by the sex, drugs, and rock n' roll credo, and they were uncompromising in their mission to go straight to the top. Their talent was undeniable.
The hard rock metal scene had been turned on its ear with the 1983 release of Shout at the Devil, MOTLEY CRUE's second release, a hit-laden, musical masterpiece that holds up to this day. Two more critically-acclaimed, commercially-successful albums would follow with world tours which grossed massive amounts of money. The snares and perils that often come with rock superstardom fell upon members of the band, yet record sales, continuous airplay, and heavy rotation on MTV kept the CRUE ever-relevant.
Fast forward: when MOTLEY CRUE commissioned record producer Bob Rock to make what would become the band's most prodigious musical statement. As Rock tells it:
"I met with them at Tommy's house...they were all sober and ready to make the best album they could possibly make. I was immediately inspired by their passion to be the biggest band in the world." Thus, in 1989 MOTLEY CRUE released their fifth studio album, Dr. Feelgood, and what the band had envisioned came to pass. The album topped the Billboard Top 200 chart, and they were the biggest band in the world with the greatest show on Earth.
The Dr. Feelgood World Tour kicked off at the now-legendary Moscow Music Peace Festival in Russia and by the time the tour wrapped in late 1990, the band had played over 100 shows to over 2 million faithful fans. MOTLEY CRUE continues to fill stadiums around the world with many classics from Dr. Feelgood in their setlist to this day.
The rest is rock n' roll history, kids!
