"Smoke On The Water" Jam Cancelled By Newsferatu, Writer Wednesday, February 14, 2007 @ 3:39 PM
Harrods department store had sent out a call for 2,000 players to get together on Sunday (February 18th) to jam on Ritchie Blackmore's classic riff, in an attempt to break the world record for most guitarists simultaneously playing one song. But a message on the retailer's website reads, "We regret to inform you, that due to unforeseen circumstances, we have had to take the unavoidable decision to cancel the World Record breaking attempt on Sunday 18th February. We are extremely sorry to disappoint those who were looking forward to this event, and do hope that no inconvenience has been caused. Please pass this message on to those who you know were planning to attend and register on the day."
In their initial call to guitarists, Harrods said the record is currently held by 1,322 people who played "Smoke On The Water" in Vancouver, British Columbia, back in 1994.
The record-breaking attempt was to be held in conjunction with the ongoing "Harrods Rocks" promotion, which includes a display of rare guitars and instruments from Neil Young, Peter Frampton, the Edge from U2, Carlos Santana, Keith Richards and Ronnie Wood from the Rolling Stones, and Tony Iommi from Black Sabbath, among others.
