At the Key Club

A wind storm hitting Los Angeles hard tonight knocked out power to The Roxy & Rainbow next door for a few hours but The Key Club was completely unaffected as the show was well attended inside. 'Lights Out' indeed!

UFO performed a really solid show, great musicianship, but in my opinion it was overshawdowed somewhat by Phil Mogg and his really, really dry English wit in between songs as it was non sequitur after non sequitur of aimless stories/gibberish that just went nowhere. Half the time no one could make out what he was talking about and it really was only the aspect of theUFO set that slowed the pacing I felt.

Hate to say this about a legendary performer but in the flow of what your saying if its not setting up the next song, 'dummy up' and sing! Now to his credit Phil at age 61 still has the pipes and still hits the notes especially on 'Love To Love','Mother Mary'and 'Only You Can Rock Me'.

This version of UFO in support of the latest CD The Visitor is rounded out by Vinnie Moore on Guitar, Rob De Luca (ex-Spread Eagle/Sebastian Bach) on Bass and core members along with Phil Mogg, Paul Raymond - Guitar/Keyboards & Andy Parker- Drums

Go see them if they come through your town you may be less critical than I about what the singer is doing in between songs but make no mistake...its a solid 90 min of UFO classics!

THE SET LIST (most what you would expect)

UFO and SCARRED Rocked the night!Lights Out was a little blue without Schenker, but great show otherwise. At the age that Phil is the guy still Rocked!Sang all my favorite UFO songs. My second time seeing Scarred and let me tell you this is the band to see, outstanding show .. vocalist is amazing, reminds me of Faiths Warning singer, but with agression.

These guys could play a 3 hour set and still leave a lot of good tunes off. Nothing original from the Paul Chapman era. Nothing from the mid 80's. Nothing from the reincarnation of the early/mid 90's (walk on water, Covenant or sharks). Hell - very little from the new era for that matter. Still - not a bad set list. Hell I've seen these guys a ton but my luck was bad this year. Living in Des Moines - you wouldn't expect them to play here but after I secured Raider/Eagle tix for Oct 18th damned if I don't see them playing at a small venue in Des Moines. Shit! Well - at least the Raiders won.

KittieFan - 11/2/2009 12:17:23 PM
damn they didn't play 'Stop breaking down' in NYC or NJ but they did in LA. I wonder why?

Just been getting into UFO recently and I gotta admit "strangers In The Night" maybe the best live album ever.

savoid - 11/2/2009 4:08:39 AM
Tizz ! You might want to look into Frank Marino of (Mahogany Rush) before making that claim.

tizzod - 11/1/2009 3:23:00 PM
The only guy that rips faster and better than Schenker is Shwisgar Swisgaard of DETHKLOK

scrapmetal - 10/30/2009 5:35:08 PM
while moore played the Schenk bits flawlessly when I saw UFO in NH 3 years ago,his own style of appreggios, sweeps, etc did not fit in at all with the old classics from the Strangers in the night live album.

djwill - 10/30/2009 12:12:12 PM
I disagree..Vinnie is more than capable..its an omission that left many suprised. Think of any bands biggest hit and then they dont play it live.
