Despite the fact that Los Angeles is being overrun by queefy, run-of-the-mill bands that milquetoast reviewers consider exciting or brutal, there remains a metal underground where we get our sustenance. While we often experience drought, the source never runs dry. Soon it rains metal again. Veteran L.A. thrashers, Anger as Art have brought forth a bounty of pure, old school thrash with their third album, Disfigure.

This expressive downpour proves that this four-piece band is most definitely angry—and loudly lets it be known--without the cacophonic shitty sound so typical with a lot of the bands that do Warped Tour. Singer/guitarist and founding member Steve Gaines (Abattoir, Bloodlust, Tactics, Bitch, Dreams of Damnation, Pagan War Machine) along with guitarist Daniel Oliverio (Abattoir), bassist Angelo Espino (Hirax, Reverend), and drummer Rob Alaniz (Evil Dead, Abattoir, Winterthrall) are out to crush with Disfigure, and all ten tracks on the album exemplify their mission.

“It Feels Like Blood” is outright hateful rage, sure to make any Exodus lover happy with anger. Gaines’ hearty vocals complement the hellish instrumental accompaniment from his bandmates. The Gaines/Oliverio team has been Abattoir-proven and is an all-out guitar animal that snarls many times throughout the album. “Anger is a Gift” is furious aggression, a hit of Hammett and Hetfield, guitaristically-speaking, displaying the power and mad dexterity of drummer Rob Alaniz. The music and message of AAA is straight-forward and extremely listenable at high volume. Who said anger can’t be constructive?
