Slayer Shreds Southern Florida

So last month I get 2 tickets to see Slayer play in South Florida. I offer one to my bro Matthew Roy in Salt Lake City; fly on down for the weekend. He says he'll pass because on the same evening, he will be front and center in Utah banging to Motorhead at a club gig. Very cool. Been awhile since we moshed about together, even if there will be 2000 miles between us, the spirit will be alive. Motorhead cancelled in SLC, day of show.

Hurricane Slayer blew into Boynton Beach, Florida on Saturday, May 11. The venue, Ovation, is a hollowed out grocery store, in a strip mall, next door to a strip club.

My gorgeous wife and I drove the 65 miles from Miami to attend the slam-fest. I promise we didn't drink too much on the way. I've seen Slayer 15 times in 19 years. My wife was to lose her virginity tonight.

The place was packed; I estimate 1800 well-fueled people dressed in black. The bar feature was $2.00 shots of Jagermeister.

Diecast opened and played a tight 30 minute set of forgettable noise. Their soundman did not have them dialed in too good -- all you heard was distorted bass and the monotone drone of their frontman.

Hatebreed had a small legion of fans in attendance. They're a good band! Seen 'em on Tattoo The Earth couple of years ago. Their new CD is cool too. Had the pit swirling when they hit that 4/4 stride we love. The 'Breed played a crisp 40 minute set that broke the crowd into a damp sweat.

After a short re-fueling, the minions began the chant: "Slayer, Slayer, Slayer." The anticipation built. Clenched fists. The gnashing of teeth. The house lights dimmed and “The Darkness Of Christ” began. Lombardo raised his fist as he settled in behind his massive drum kit. “Disciple” roared and we screamed with Araya, "God Hates Us All!!" Yeah. I know he fuckin hates me.

The best metal band of all time (truth!) played a 90-minute retrospective of their career. Highlights were "Payback," "South of Heaven," "Chemical Warfare," "Raining Blood" and "Bloodline." Araya thanked those of us who've supported them for 20 years. The guitar duo of Kerry King & Jeff Hanneman took us to hell, took us to war, and launched our vessels at breakneck speeds. My neck is sore, my ears are still ringing. My wife, not a Slayer fan, was very impressed. She said, "I didn't know they had such rhythm!" Yeah. The final joint was "Angel Of Death." As the exhausted crowd exited, I noted that everyone looked like they had taken a fully-clothed shower.

My thoughts go out to my bro Matt. Poor bastard missed Motorhead and Slayer on the same night. When I arrived home, he'd left 15 drunken angry messages on my voice mail. God Hates Us All. God Hates Us All.
