CD Review: ANTHRAX Anthems By Charlie Steffens aka Gnarly Charlie, Writer/Photographer Saturday, March 23, 2013 @ 11:30 AM
Having recorded songs by Joe Jackson, BLACK SABBATH, and other bands on previous efforts,
ANTHRAX has revisited the cover game again with Anthems. The EP is made up of rock
and roll songs from the '70s and '80s, including a remix of "Crawl" and the original version
on their 2011 album, Worship Music. ANTHRAX has etched their own musical insignia
on songs by their favorite bands, such as RUSH, AC/DC, BOSTON, CHEAP TRICK, and THIN LIZZY.
Covering "Anthem" by RUSH might seem unlikely for this venerable thrash metal band to
do, but it's laid down right and with respect. Charlie Benante's drumming shines big on
"Anthem", as does Rob Caggiano, whose guitar work gives a reverent nod to Alex
Lifeson, throwing down echoes, wah-wahs, and the scorching solo mid-song. "TNT" is a
razor-sharp cover of AC/DC's classic, in which singer Joey Belladonna channels the late
Bon Scott, minus the rasp. The jaw-dropper on the EP is JOURNEY's "Keep on
Runnin'". As for "Jailbreak", Belladonna just might be parodying Phil Lynott
at the Hey you! Good lookin' female... point in the song. Obviously, the members of ANTHRAX didn't
take themselves too seriously on this one. The good time they had doing these classic covers is palpable,
and their love of their musical roots comes across as well.
