Saying Goodbye to Arizona

Sad to say I was a little disappointed with the Farewell performance of Geoff Tate’s QUEENSRYCHE. While the band was top notch, it just didn’t feel like anything was there. They weren’t a cover band per se, but the vibe kind of flirted with that from time to time, as they seemed to be going through the motions. The crowd would get riled up for a favorite song or two, but then go to the bar for a few songs, or out to the casino to smoke, etc.
Having two big guns in the band as well, Rudy Sarzo on bass and Simon Wright on drums, it was also disappointing to see them at the Talking Stick Resort as this venue is at a 650 capacity max. Nice place, don’t get me wrong, but I figured they easily could have packed another venue in the valley at least double that size.
Regardless, the band was spot on with such classics as "Best I Can", "I Am I", "The Needle Lies" and "I Don’t Believe In Love". The momentum and crowd enthusiasm seemed to fade a bit with "Silent Lucidity", "Della Brown", and "Cold" which is off Geoff’s QUEENSRYCHE’s album Frequency Unknown.
However, as his tour ends, it’s time to move on. Now that the QUEENSRYCHE lawsuits are over and done with, Geoff will be returning with his band, renamed OPERATION: MINDCRIME, and has stated in interviews that the band will be going in to the studio winter ’14 to record a conceptual three record ‘story’. Should prove interesting with Geoff’s creativity at the helm.
