It’s been about a good 20 years since “rock ‘n roll’s dirty little secret” known as NASHVILLE PUSSY released their debut album Let Them Eat Pussy, quickly kicking sand into the proverbial vagina of the modern alt-rock scene that had been lacking a lot of its hoochie coochie. A personal favorite of Lemmy Kilmister and having preached its sleazy gospel over the past couple of decades alongside MOTORHEAD, THE SUPERSUCKERS, RHINO BUCKET and many other bands in every rock outpost from Asia to Europe and back again, the unabashed and unashamed quartet featuring the loud-sounding talents of Blaine Cartwright and Ruyter Suys can claim to have outlived most musical trends that even the band themselves never knew had existed. Sometimes they’ve even outlasted many of their contemporaries – Lemmy sadly being one of them – and their own rhythm sections. Their seventh full-length studio album Pleased To Eat You features bassist Bonnie "Bon" Buitrago making the leap from sneaking into the band’s shows to playing with them and ex-landscaper Ben Thomas on drums, known for his showmanship, precision, and all-around sensuality behind the kit. And it’s not just the new hard-driving rhythm section that’s made a surreal impact on NP’s new album.

Rest assured, first off, that the blistering blues-fueled rock riffs of Ruyter Suys and the acerbic yet hilarious jailhouse nursery rhymes of Blaine Cartwright are still as loud and proud and prevalent as ever on Pleased To Eat You. “She Keeps Me Coming”, “Drinking My Life Away”, “Just Another White Boy”, “Low Down Dirty Pig” and “Hang Tight” among others are the purest of the pure-sounding NASHVILLE PUSSY tracks around – fearless, biting, sardonic and all-around fucking real. And while most bands often thrive on change to the point of compromising their identity, NASHVILLE PUSSY approach change in the ravenous manner of someone at an all-you-can-eat buffet piling up their dish with whatever’s the most filling and palatable. If change done NP style means that “Testify” kicks off with a church sermon by Blaine accompanied by a soaring Hammond organ, that’s fine by me. Ruyter delivering a precise slide guitar intro that would’ve brought Gregg Allman to his knees on the intro to their cover of NAZARETH’s “Woke Up This Morning”? Sure thing, since their cover kicks ass over the original anyway (and I always thought it was a bizarre song for NAZARETH to write in the first place once I really listened to the lyrics). And when was the last time a NASHVILLE PUSSY song featured a harmonica before “Hang Tight”, if ever? “Endless Ride” is officially the closest to SKYNYRD and BLACKFOOT that NP have approached with its haunting yet rockin’ groove; they sounded like a band determined to live forever in accordance to the lyrics as they played each note. Finally, Pleased To Eat You closes with “Blaine’s Bedtime Stories” which is a spoken-word collection of the album’s best lyrics, its random lyrical connection organized in such a manner that the message resonates loud and clear in any form.

This is a seriously driven album by a band that had just wrapped up a good year-and-a-half long world tour at around the time of its recording and credit towards the talents of producer Daniel Rey (RAMONES, WHITE ZOMBIE, RONNIE SPECTOR, RAGING SLAB) and studio engineer David Barrick (BLACK STONE CHERRY, THE KENTUCKY HEADHUNTERS, MARSHALL TUCKER BAND) for arranging the album’s recording in near short notice and whipping up a bountiful dish from a basic recipe of bourbon, BBQ, horse farms, good people, and culminating into a great fucking record that we’ve always come to expect from the seasoned force that is NASHVILLE PUSSY.
