KELAKOS made a bit of a name for themselves on the local scenes of Massachusetts and upstate New York in the late '60s and '70s. Originally known as EMERGENCY EXIT, then THE CRIMINALS, the group finally settled on the name KELAKOS in 1975 to honor the family heritage of their charismatic and virtuosic frontman George Kelakos Haberstroh.

With their line-up now solidfield with drummer Carl Canedy, rhythm guitarist Mark Sisson, bassist and co-vocalist Linc Bloomfield, and Haberstroh, KELAKOS had written and recorded their 1978 debut album Gone Are The Days. The album didn't exactly set the music world on fire, but it did mark the beginning of a storied music career for Canedy, who went on to form THE RODS, and produce several notable Hard Rock and Metal releases. KELAKOS broke up shortly after their debut, with Haberstroh continuing on as a solo act. Sisson stayed in the music business, but not on the performance end. Bloomfield went into the family business so to speak.

That would have been the end of the KELAKOS story had it not been for drummer Carl Canedy discovering their old studio recordings, and bassist Linc Bloomfield taking another approach to their production. The result was the 2015 KELAKOS release Uncorked: Rare Tracks From a Vintage 70s Band. This time around, their music did light some fires under people. Critics and fans alike were blown away at what they heard, which caused the main players to ponder, I wonder what we could accomplish if we took another stab at this?

KELAKOS is back with their first new studio album in 45 years, entitled Hurtling Toward Extinction. The album was released on December 1, 2023 through Deko Entertainment. I had the chance to catch up with former U.S. Assistant Secretary for Political Military Affairs, former U.S. National Security Advisor to the Vice President of the United States, and current KELAKOS bassist Linc Bloomfield.

Bloomfield discusses the history of KELAKOS from their high school beginnings, to their college club days, to their first album, and their break up. Bloomfield also discusses what led to the reissuing of their old recordings in 2015, which eventually led to their current release Hurtling Toward Extinction. Bloomfield breaks down the recording and songwriting process, whether we can expect any live performances, and if future recordings are possible. Bloomfield hints at a future solo album, discusses his DC-based charity band, his production work on current U.S. Secretary of State Anthony Blinken's music (under ABLINKEN), and much, much more.
