Legendary punk band THE DAMNED set the Ace Of Spades on fire this last Saturday night with special guests, T.V. SMITH'S THE ADVERTS, beginning this special tour on May 15th at CBGBS in New York City, where the band got its start way back in 1976, bringing the band's legendary lineup back for this special tour, reuniting with original drummer Rat Scabies after a 35-year hiatus.
The fans were gathered amid the 103-degree heat of Sacramento in their best punk suits of armor to witness punk rock royalty.
Hailing from London in 1976 THE DAMNED are the influential pioneers of the punk rock genre, still pushing boundaries after 47 years. Since their debut album release, this band continues to mystify and ignite fans across all the generations X, Y, And Z were there celebrating the illustrious career of one of the most beloved punk rock bands of all time. Tagging along are T.V. SMITH'S THE ADVERTS, also a legendary Punk Band out of the U.K.
The evening began with THE ADVERTS, fronted by T.V. Smith, the leader and original member, who was joined by as he calls them, "A Crack team of Houston musicians". Smith is a legend and pioneer of the Punk Rock genre, also from the U.K. Smith and the crack team led the Punk Brigade with songs from their seminal debut album, with songs like "No Time To Be 21" and other classic hits spanning this bands legacy like "Neat Neat Neat" and "Television's Over", along with songs from T.V. Smith's solo career. With the energy and fervor of men half his age, Smith certainly kicked out the jams with his band of Houston musicians this evening, lending his expertise in the Punk Rock genre for fans of all generations to bear witness. This compelling opening act was the perfect prelude to the evening's headliner and a treat to see such a celebrated icon in Punk Rock's celebrated heritage.
The evening continues with anticipation for the headliner, as the multi-generational fans are now sufficiently warmed up for the Legendary Punk Rock icons to take the stage. THE DAMNED are also an iconic band from the U.K., formed in 1976, fronted by David Vanian. Trailblazers and pioneers of the Punk Rock Genre, this ensemble sports the early days lineup. It is highly anticipated and revered as the band's favorite in history. The set starts with the band emerging, member by member. As Vanian takes the stage, the ladies in the front are screaming and crying. This 69-year-old gothic vampire is evoking emotions in the crowd. I even saw a woman with a David Vanian tattoo across the length of her arm. I expected black lace panties to be thrown at the stage. Vanian reminds me of a gothic Tom Jones.
Opening with the classic "Love Song" followed by "Machine Gun Etiquette", the fans of multiple generations were at a fever pitch singing every word as Vanian floated across the stage gripping his microphone with gloved hands and a smashing waistcoat, the Infamous "Captain Sensible", the cheery, happy counterpart to Vanian's dark, mysterious persona. Donned in primary colors and a signature crimson beret, his guitar playing was stellar and I loved every minute of it. This was the first time I had seen or heard any songs performed by THE DAMNED and it was glorious. These influential punk rock pioneers played a massive set list spanning their almost 50-year career. They played songs from their 1977 debut album, Damned Damned Damned, and more. They embrace diversity and encourage individuality in their song lyrics, and this philosophy is reflected in their overall approach. They are legendary as well as influential, carrying the punk rock torch to the young generations. The memorable songs and band's discography ring out in the club as the set rolls on with the addition of original member Rat Scabies on drums and legendary bass player Paul Gray. This was a truly special and unforgettable evening. Reaffirming their Punk legacy and compelling as ever THE DAMNED has earned their place in Punk Rock history. Their ability to connect with fans across generations is awe-inspiring and worth seeing again. Although this was the last stop on their 2025 spring tour, they will continue on to Europe in the summer. Next time they come around, I won't miss them. Both bands this evening were a celebration of heritage and a deep dive into the beginnings of the Punk Rock genre and legacy. It was nostalgic, authentic, and supremely appreciated. A stellar evening was had by all.
