Helmet Live at the House of Bl

For those of you who were loyal Helmet devotees before their last disbandment, you may dig the Helmet incarnation that’s touring North America right now.

If you take a bassist like Frank Bello (Anthrax), and a drummer like John Tempesta (Testament, Rob Zombie), and join them together with Page Hamilton and Chris Traynor, you then have a recipe for a metal explosive.

They played a set that was a good mix from their discography, which included four songs from their latest release, Size Matters. Bello and Tempesta had joined forces in the recording studio to make this album with the two veteran Helmet members last year. Their sound was superb and really loud. Consider that House of Blues, Hollywood, is a small joint and the dials were turned down. These guys have big stadium sound, especially with two high caliber dudes taking on the bass and drum duties.

Frank Bello is amazing. While laying down hard, slick bass lines, he moved around on stage like a madman, waking up the wasting flatliners in the crowd and giving eyesight to the blind.

John Tempesta is one of rock’s finest drummers. It’s hard to imagine his drum kit parked on a stage with Helmet, but I done seen it that night, son. At one point in the set he was the whole show. Citing John Bonham as one of his major influences, this claim is so apparent when you see and hear this guy play. His style is stand up and stands alone.

Page Hamilton and Chris Traynor did Helmet that night like they do Helmet. They were doing more of the same thing, yet completely different. Huh? Go check them out.

SET LIST:

Pure
Smart
Just Another Victim
See You Dead
Birth Defect
Everybody Loves You
Milquetoast
Last Breath
Wilma’s Rainbow
In The Meantime
Unsung
