The storm that tore across North America neared its end as the Psycho Thunder Tour reached The Union Event Center in Salt Lake City, Utah. British rockers ASKING ALEXANDRIA joined forces with Mongolian folk-rock band THE HU and special guests ZERO 9:36 for an unforgettable bill that combined strikingly different styles to produce an evening of musical diversity and mind-blowing talent.

Before I get into the review of the show itself, I feel the need to give a shoutout to the Union Event Center. I'm always a little uncertain of how things are going to go when I attend a show at an unfamiliar venue, but I must say that the staff and security were some of the nicest people that I have ever met. They were polite, appreciative, and sincerely interested in helping concertgoers have a great night.

Now, onto the show! My evening started off with a VIP Meet and Greet with ASKING ALEXANDRIA which offered an intimate acoustic set combined with a Q & A. I generally don't splurge on these kinds of indulgences, but it was totally worth it to hear unplugged renditions of "Psycho" and "Alone In A Room". The songs were pure and beautiful. It was awesome to get to see their fun personalities as they interacted with each other and their fans. This was truly money well spent.

First to hit the stage was ZERO 9:36 from Langhorne, Pennsylvania. Relative newcomers to the scene, ZERO 9:36 have been increasing in popularity with radio hits such as "Adrenaline" and "The End". Their mix of rap and rock fueled by aggression and anger captivated the crowd from the first note. Singer Matthew Cullen was engaging, and their style seemed somewhat reminiscent of early LINKIN PARK. Their 30-minute set definitely got the audience's blood pumping and in the mood for a stellar rock show.

Setlist:

  • "II X Two"
  • "Stuck in My Ways"
  • "The End"
  • "Break"
  • "The Fear"
  • "In My Hands"
  • "Adrenaline"
  • "I'm Not"
Next, ASKING ALEXANDRIA hit the stage will all of the excitement and raw energy that their fans have come to expect. Originally formed in 2006 in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, the band moved to England and reformed to more easily achieve international success. Although founder and lead guitarist Ben Bruce was noticeably absent, Paul Bartolome admirably and skillfully filled his shoes. James Cassells kept the beat perfectly despite his recently fractured foot which resulted in cancelations of many dates on their recent European tour. Danny Worsnop's vocals were spot-on as he effortlessly took us along on a voyage through their discography. Admittedly, the ASKING ALEXANDRIA sound has evolved over their 15-year career, much to the satisfaction of some fans and the chagrin of others. According to Worsnop, he planned to take us on a "journey of all the flavors of all the things that ASKING ALEXANDRIA has been" and he did just that. Touring in support of their new album Where Do We Go From Here? the setlist included new songs as well as some of their older and heavier favorites, giving everyone something to savor. As he transitioned from melodies to screams, his voice remained flawless. Having seen ASKING ALEXANDRIA on previous tours, I can undoubtedly say that this setlist was my favorite as it honored their roots and embraced their future.

Setlist:

  • "The Violence"
  • "Alone Again"
  • "Bad Blood"
  • "Breathless"
  • "Killing You"
  • "Moving On"
  • "Dark Void"
  • "Into the Fire"
  • "Where Did It Go"
  • "To the Stage"
  • "A Prophecy"
  • "The Final Episode (Let's Change the Channel)
  • "Alone in a Room"
  • "Let Go"
To end the evening, Mongolian folk-metal artists, THE HU took the stage. Hailing from Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, THE HU burst onto the scene in 2018. If I'm being honest, I hadn't really given much credence to all of the hype surrounding THE HU after their release of "Wolf Totem" featuring Jacoby Shaddix of PAPA ROACH. However, after their release of "This Is Mongol" featuring William DuVall of ALICE IN CHAINS, I must say I stand corrected. Their combination of unfamiliar sounding native "hunnu rock" and recognizable metal was almost bewildering to my ears. At the same time as my mind was trying to process the exotic fusion of sounds, my eyes were mesmerized by the stage performance. Before me stood 8 musicians ingeniously playing instruments that I didn't recognize yet producing sounds that I was instantly drawn to. Admittedly, I'd never planned on attending a show featuring the styles of Mongolian throat singing along side a traditional horsehead fiddle, but now that I have, I think I will gladly do it again! As the show progressed, the crowd sang along oblivious to the meaning of the foreign lyrics, but on this night, the love and feeling of the music transcended the barrier of language.

Setlist:

  • "Shihi Hutu"
  • "Shoogshoog"
  • "The Gereg"
  • "EseerinVasahina" (The Agasar cover)
  • "YUT Hovende"
  • "Mother Nature"
  • "Tatar Warrior"
  • "The Great Chinggis Khaan"
  • "Upright Destined Mongol"
  • "Black Thunder"
  • "Through the Never" (Metallica cover)
  • "YuveYuve Yu"
  • "Wolf Totem"
  • "This Is Mongol"
