After what felt like an eternity of winter, concert season has finally arrived, and the anticipation is palpable. Last night (4/17/24), I had the pleasure of attending a spectacular show at Hero Arena inside the Mountain America Center featuring BREAKING BENJAMIN, DAUGHTRY, and CATCH YOUR BREATH. Accompanied by my trusty setlist documentarian and my son, we eagerly soaked in the electrifying atmosphere. Despite being a Wednesday night, the venue nestled amidst potato fields drew in a diverse crowd of rock enthusiasts from toddlers to seniors, highlighting the universal appeal of the lineup. The Mountain America Center strikes the perfect balance, offering ample space for top-tier performances while preserving an intimate ambiance. Reflecting on the night, it's clear that this tour truly had something for everyone.

My son was eagerly anticipating the performance of the opening act, CATCH YOUR BREATH. Although he had been listening to their music for a while, I was excited to experience some fresh sounds. As part of my routine for reviewing bands, I delved into researching their background and members, but the internet seemed surprisingly lacking in factoids. However, I did discover that CATCH YOUR BREATH hails from Austin, Texas. The quartet, comprised of Josh, Logan, Cianan, and Onell, took the stage to a crowd that was already buzzing with excitement. While I recognized a few of their songs from the radio, the majority of their set was new to me.

CATCH YOUR BREATH made their mark on the music scene with hit singles like "21 Gun Salute" and "Dial Tone", which received heavy airplay on platforms like SiriusXM and Spotify. It's worth noting that while "Dial Tone" is a fantastic song, I couldn't help but wonder if some of their younger listeners even knew what a dial tone was. Nevertheless, from the moment they stepped onto the dimly lit stage enveloped in fog, they held the audience captive with their flawless vocals and infectious guitar riffs. Throughout their set, the crowd enthusiastically sang along to the lyrics in unison, a testament to the band's ability to connect with their audience.

For an opening act, CATCH YOUR BREATH's performance was undeniably impressive. It's evident that these guys are destined to reach great heights in the music industry. If you have the opportunity, I highly recommend catching them live. Mark my words, they're on the rise!

Setlist:

  • "Savages"
  • "Criminal"
  • "Y.S.K.W."
  • "Ricochet"
  • "Fade"
  • "21 Gun Salute"
  • "Shame On Me"
  • "Dial Tone"
DAUGHTRY took the stage next, and for those of us who remember his journey from American Idol, there's always a special connection with Chris Daughtry. Despite not being one to usually indulge in reality TV, I found myself hooked on his journey. I'll even admit to calling in a vote or ten. Before DAUGHTRY, these shows tended to focus more on country, pop, and adult contemporary artists, so it was refreshing to see a down-to-earth rocker like Chris enjoy mainstream success. While his American Idol journey ended during ELVIS week, it marked just the beginning of his rise to fame.

Chris Daughtry now fronts the band DAUGHTRY, accompanied by Josh Steely on lead guitar, Brian Craddock on guitar, Jeremy Schaffer on drums, Marty O'Brien on bass and Elvio Fernandes on keyboard, backing vocals, and guitar. Currently touring in support of their upcoming seventh studio album, they kicked off their set with the powerful anthem "Changes Are Coming". This song showcases Chris's impressive vocal range and intensity, supported by the stellar musicianship of the band, all set against a backdrop of vibrant lights and strobes. Dressed in his iconic sleeveless shirt, Chris held the audience spellbound with his raw yet refined vocals. Following up with "World On Fire", a personal favorite of mine, they delved into a heavy and dark, apocalyptic theme that resonates especially during the challenging times of the not-so-distant pandemic. The rendition of JOURNEY's "Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)" was masterfully executed by Chris, even without Lzzy Hale's cameo from the album version.

As the set progressed, unexpected surprises emerged, such as the seamless blend of "Crashed" with LED ZEPPELIN's "Kashmir" and an acoustic rendition of DEFTONES' "Change (In the House of Flies)". The emotional centerpiece of the set was "Pieces", a poignant reflection on loss inspired by Chris's experiences with the passing of his mother and daughter. The addition of Chris's son, Noah, on keyboard for "Over You" was a heartwarming surprise.

Closing out the set with the powerful tracks "Heavy Is The Crown" and "Artificial", the band left a lasting impression on the audience. While some classic DAUGHTRY hits like "Home", "What About Now" and "September" were notably absent from the setlist, it only serves as further motivation to catch them live again. As they say, absence makes the heart grow fonder, and I'm sure the next DAUGHTRY concert will be just as unforgettable.

Setlist:

  • "Changes Are Coming"
  • "World on Fire"
  • "Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)"
  • "Crashed"/"Kashmir"
  • "Change (In the House of Flies)"
  • "Pieces"
  • "It's Not Over"
  • "Over You"
  • "Heavy Is the Crown"
  • "Artificial"
As the anticipation reached its peak, the crowd grew visibly restless while awaiting the arrival of headliners BREAKING BENJAMIN. Formed in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania in 1999, the band has experienced various line-up changes, including a significant hiatus due to founder and frontman Benjamin Burnley's health issues. The current roster includes Benjamin Burnley on lead vocals and guitar, Keith Wallen on rhythm guitar and backing vocals, Jasen Rauch on lead guitar, Aaron Bruch on bass and backing vocals, and Shaun Foist on drums.

When the lights dimmed, the venue was filled with booming music emanating from a massive array of speakers concealed behind a large white curtain at the front of the stage. As the curtain fell, the crowd erupted with excitement. The first three songs, "Failure", "Until the End", and "Red Cold River", were absolute face-melters, setting the tone for an electrifying performance. Despite the presence of a large video screen behind them, the stage remained predominantly dark, with intermittent flashes of red or orange light illuminating the band members. True to form, Burnley took the stage clad in his signature black leather jacket and low-fitting baseball cap, adding to the mystique as he almost entirely obscured his face.

The music that enveloped us was nothing short of pure, crisp, and emotionally charged. The absence of visual distractions only heightened the impact of the sound washing over us. For the next three songs, VIP fans were granted access to the pit area, providing them with a more intimate concert experience. Throughout the set, BREAKING BENJAMIN delivered hit after hit, captivating the audience with every perfectly executed note.

In the midst of their 18-song set, Burnley welcomed Chris Daughtry back to the stage for a stunning duet of "Breath". The harmonious blend of their distinct styles and vocal ranges was truly impressive, with their voices intertwining seamlessly. Following this standout moment, "Polyamorous", my second favorite song, took the spotlight, with the accompanying video quickly bringing listeners up to speed on its meaning.

As the set progressed, the band continued to deliver one hit after another, leaving the crowd hungry for more. They brought the night to a thrilling close with their iconic hit, "The Diary of Jane". Despite the impressive 85-minute performance, there was one thing missing for me - the song "Water". It's a hope I cling to, that perhaps with enough attendance at their shows, or maybe with a nudge from this review, the band might just grant my wish and add it to a future setlist. Here's to hoping!

Setlist:

  • "Failure"
  • "Until the End"
  • "Red Cold River"
  • "Evil Angel"
  • "Blow Me Away"
  • "Follow"
  • "Angels Fall"
  • "So Cold"
  • "Dance With the Devil"
  • "Crawl"
  • "Breath"
  • "Polyamorous"
  • "Without You"
  • "Dear Agony"
  • "The Power of Love" (Huey Lewis)
  • "I Will Not Bow"
  • "Had Enough"
  • "The Diary of Jane"
What a phenomenal way to kick off the 2024 concert season! The lineup of CATCH YOUR BREATH, DAUGHTRY, and BREAKING BENJAMIN provided a perfect mix of new discoveries, emotional depth, and high-octane rock. From adding CATCH YOUR BREATH to my playlist to delving into the emotional journey with DAUGHTRY and rocking out with BREAKING BENJAMIN, the night was filled with unforgettable moments. If this tour swings by anywhere near you, it's a must-see without a doubt. Hats off to the Mountain America Center for consistently bringing top-notch music and events to our community. We're truly fortunate to have such a fantastic venue!
