Warrant Born Again By Debby Rao, Boston Contributor Thursday, January 18, 2007 @ 10:12 AM
Warrant now features new lead singer Jaime St. James (ex-Black N’ Blue), guitarists Erik Turner and Joey Allen, bass player Jerry Dixon and drummer Steven Sweet.
Born Again features twelve songs, including the opening track, ”Devil Juice", which takes you down south with its catchy guitar rhythms, and sets the tone for the whole album. "Dirty Jack" is reminiscent of "Uncle Tom's Cabin" with its acoustic intro, building up to a feverish rhythm tempo.
My favorite song off of Born Again is "Bourbon County Line". Laden with a great chorus, and stellar guitar work, the song showcases Jaime St. James strong bluesy voice.
Born Again sounds like a whole new Warrant. There is only one ballad entitled, ”Glimmer". I must say, Jaime St. James has always been more of a bluesy singer, but his voice sounds really rich and mellow on this new Warrant ballad.
"Velvet Noose", has some nice guitar work, and the song "Roxy" is a fun song that takes you back to the 80's on Sunset Strip.
Born Again" ends on a heavy note with the dueling guitars of Erik Turner and Joey Allen on the song,” Good Times".
Born Again" has a flawless production that is well orchestrated and brings out the best sound possible in every song.
I recently had the opportunity to ask Jaime, how if felt to replace Jani Lane. "It is probably the most difficult thing for a band to replace a singer. I have to be at my best every night. I can't cheat. Fans are going to compare me to Jani, and I have to give it my all. I like the challenge. The response has been really great so far. Erik came up with the title of the new album, Born Again. We went into the studio and everything fell right into place. It is the rebirth of Warrant."
Although the hit ballads may be missing in Born Again, the album features a new, stronger Warrant that proves they are masters of their craft, and still are able to crank out quality music, even though the heyday of the 80's is long over.
