MICHAEL SCHENKER GROUP
Immortal
Nuclear Blast
Review By Daniel Licitra, Florida Contributor
I've always liked Michael Schenker since his days with SCORPIONS and UFO and his early albums in MSG. I haven't kept up with much of his newer material but was looking forward to reviewing his latest album titled Immortal.
My early advance copy didn't come with liner notes but the press release lists three drummers, Bodo Schopf, Simon Phillips, and Brian Tichy, four different singers, Ronnie Romero, Michael Voss, Ralf Scheepers, and Joe Lynn Turner, two keyboard players, Steve Mann and Derek Sherinian, and Barry Sparks played bass.
First track "Drilled To Kill" has the recognizable voice of Ralf Scheepers. It's a fast track with sparring guitar and keyboard at the center of it. Ralf also sings on track number five, "Devil's Daughter". Another fast song.
Michael Voss slows things down with track number four, "After The Rain". Ronnie Romero sings on track six "Sail the Darkness", which reminded me of Dio-era RAINBOW. Track number ten, the last track "In Search of The Peace of Mind", is a re-recording from SCORPIONS' Lonesome Crow album but with Gary Barden, Robin McAuley, Doogie White, and Ronnie Romero all singing on it with an extended solo from Michael at the end. Another highlight is track number nine, "Sangria Morte", which sounds like a modern day Spaghetti Western theme song.
I'm happy to hear that Michael Schenker still has a lot more great music to give to the world after his 50th anniversary as a musician. I'd recommend purchasing it when it's released.
