Shadows Fall and Lamb of God: two hard working bands who are rulers in the heavy music hemisphere. They have proved their mettle, both as opening acts and headliners, in the small clubs and the big arenas.

The Slipknot ‘Subliminal Verses’ tour brought three big metal acts together known for their vociferous musical veracity. Better put, the show these monsters played in San Diego would put your dick in the dirt or your muff in the mud, depending on your equipment. I speak for Shadows Fall and Lamb of God, mainly, since I slipped out before Slipknot came on.

I believe that Slipknot was the only band to get a sound check.

SHADOWS FALL

Shadows Fall took the stage first and played a set of songs from The Art of Balance and The War Within to an assemblage of fans, who were most appreciative. Though their set was a short one, it was impressive, nonetheless. Their sound was a little muddy, but it was Shadows Fall, damn it –playing live, out loud, with power and attitude. That would override some minor challenges as far as the sound went. Singer, Brian Fair, proposed a toast to Dimebag Darrell (RIP) and Black Tooth Grins, and knocked back a shot with a PBR chaser. The guitars of Jonathan Donais and Matt Bachand sounded mighty wicked with the bad assed rhythm section of Jason Bittner and Paul Romanko (as always). If you like this band, you would have liked their performance this night, but you might hope for a longer set in a smaller venue.

LAMB OF GOD

The boys were in fine form-- the usual picture of health, with the exception of singer Randy Blythe, who appeared to have a bad cold. This was apparent, from seeing the copious amounts of snot he was launching now and then during the show. Have you ever seen a Farmer Snag? Well, Mr. Blythe was perfecting this phlegmish art by applying one finger over the nostril while booger blasting the goods onto the stage floor. The guy is a stud, however, and still sang his ass off all the way through their performance. He gave a motivational pitch, too, in between and during songs, such as: “Get off your feet and move, San Diego. Destroy this fucking place!”

The instrumentals that Lamb of God perform are amazing. To watch these guys take a stage to pieces with their explosive sound is something no metalhead should miss. Even without their true sound optimized at this show, they, like Shadows Fall before them, made up for it with high energy, and their love for giving the audience something to remember. To see and hear drummer Chris Adler is amazing. On this bill there were two other powerhouse drummers: Jason Bittner and Joey Jordison, yet Adler is like none that I have ever seen, in terms of dexterity and raw power.

As this tour rolls on there is sure to be mindblowing shows wherever these three bands may play. This was just one.
