Your messiah was never mine …

Korn is a band of survivors who have lived it up in decadence, debauchery, and have spilled more excess than most will ever drink. And God still loves them. When guitarist Brian “Head” Welch split the band to pursue an interest in, let’s say … “less secular” jams, the other members of Korn kept on steppin’ and made some good ‘ol devil music to sanctify the deprived …and depraved.

Obviously I cannot speak for Korn fans as to what they think about the music on See You on the Other Side, but I believe it has emanated from the bowels of hell. Straight from the cob, baby. While I have been digging it in my disc player, jamming on it off and on for the last two weeks, I am now sanctified, delivered and enlightened, like some kind of amazing grace. Did you know that singer Jonathan Davis plays the bagpipes?

There are several standout tracks where it is evident that Korn have moved into a new realm a little bit without changing up the formula too much. Jumping ahead a little bit here –I’d recommend playing “Tearjerker” after ripping the cellophane off the cleverly crafted package (really cool artwork on this dude) and fall into the depths of this slow burning masterpiece. Not a headbanger, by any means, but more like a beautiful song to cut your wrists longitudinally to. You may forego this action and go contrary by playing the first song, “Twisted Transistor”, which is quite the opposite of “Tearjerker” in its “Ouch, my neck really hurts” mood, heaviness and levity.

“10 or a 2-Way” and “Getting Off” are bangin’ songs and totally live up to the Korn Bakersfield, Cali–fornication ethic that these heathens are known for. Play em loud, fool! Hypocrites is Jonathan Davis’ statement or subtle “eat my fuck” to (and on) organized religion.

I think one version of the hit single “Twisted Transistor” would have been sufficient on this double-discer, but there are three mixes to choose from. The Dummies Club Mix version flat out sucks, and when I heard its techno-wannabe Berlin/ Depeche Mode suckability I pondered an excursion to the transgender section of Bangkok, riding to the club on a Vespa, smoking a clove cig –snap, crackle, pop … Call it wishful thinking. I never rode a Vespa. A guy’s got to make a couple bucks the hard way every now and then, right Kerby? Aside from that defecation of a song and the two somewhat weak live videos of “Twisted Transistor” and “Hypocrites”, this record is worth the dough in its abundance of slamming music.

All hail to Korn. Jonathan, Fieldy, David and Munky are the four Headless whoresmen of the apocalypse. Godspeed.
