![]() Mower "Not For You" ![]() By Charlie Steffens aka Gnarly Charlie, Writer/Photographer Saturday, May 27, 2006 @ 8:27 AM ![]()
If your heavy metal boner has gone soft from inactivity and emo music, then Mower’s new release Not For You might be …well …not for you. Then again, it might be just what the doctor ordered to get that flesh sword of yours harder than Chinese arithmetic once again.
Not For You is hard to categorize because of its eclectic musical content. Though the record possesses obvious diversity in sound and style, it seems to have something for every listener who is willing to think for themselves.
“Road Rage”, the breakout single from the album, opens with tires squealing and a well-screamed “fuck”. This is a song everyone who drives in traffic can identify with. Its hard-driving, machine gun rhythm is infused with a satisfying industrial groove.
Check out the nostalgic Black Sabbath a la “Children of the Grave” vibe in “The End.”
“LA Riot” opens slowly and ominously, sounding like an attempt to channel the late Sublime vocalist Bradley Nowell’s voice and spirit. The murderous lyrics and slick, funky bassline in this gangsta-laden track are hauntingly brilliant.
Mower’s cover of the Mamas and the Papas classic “California Dreaming” is just okay. Some songs need to be left in their original state of divine vinyl.
