It's A Ghoulishly Good Time At Warehouse Live Midtown On March 30th

There's no such thing as monsters....or is there? That was the question to be answered this past Sunday at Warehouse Live Midtown just west of downtown as WEDNESDAY 13, STITCHED UP HEART, DEAD RABBITTS and I YA TOYAH each took the stage on the 'There's No Such Thing As Monsters' tour stop in Houston. It was a 'Double Creature Feature', whatever that means, for the modest crowd that had gathered for this event. Black and goth dress was in fashion for the night even though there were a few of us that have long since outgrown that period of our lives.

Rising industrial electro metal maiden I YA TOYAH, who is set to drop her new EP I Am The Fire on April 5th started things off. Translating her name into her native Polish language it means 'it's just me' and that's what we got, just her onstage with a guitar and what appeared to be a laptop/tablet to provide the additional backing music she needed. Getting the opening slot her set was obviously brief at 6 songs but she made the most of them as she belted out the title track to the new EP, "Denial", "It's No Good" and closing number and first single/video from the EP, "Panic Room". Her voice was very elegant and passionate and was a great way to kick things off. Check her out, you might be surprised.

Setlist:

  • "I Am The Fire"
  • "Vast Spaces"
  • "Denial"
  • "Pray"
  • "It's No Good"
  • "Panic Room"

DEAD RABBITTS, the band led by ESCAPE THE FATE frontman Craig Mabbitt, came next and definitely brought the brutality along with their rabbit masks. They kicked off their 8 song set with a pair of tracks from the 2022 album Rumination, that being "Raisehell.exe", which was basically a 2+ minute scream session with no recognizable lyrics although I'm sure there were some in there somewhere, and "Dead By Daylight", a surprisingly catchy number. They were also the first band to induce some obligatory moshpits, albeit small ones based on the crowd in attendance. Also out celebrating a new record, Redefined, which came out just a couple of weeks ago, DEAD RABBITTS dedicated half of their set to it with tracks like "Artificial Gods", "Mistake" and "Hellscape", for which Alecia "Mixi" Demner, who performs on the song on the album, came out and together with Mabbitt did the song in the middle of the venue's floor area while people flocked to them with their cell phones in hand. The band closed with "Deer In The Headlights" from the Shapeshifter release, and was quite appropriate for those in the audience who had never seen DEAD RABBITTS before because that's probably how they felt at set's end.

Setlist:

  • "Raisehell.exe"
  • "Dead by Daylight"
  • "Artificial Gods"
  • "Mistake"
  • "Dead Again"
  • "Hellscape" (with Mixi)
  • "Oxygen"
  • "Deer In The Headlights"

After trying for several years I finally got the opportunity to catch STITCHED UP HEART and they did not disappoint. In a 'let me return the favor' moment they began their set with the title track to their most recent album, To The Wolves from 2023 which featured Craig Mabbitt who just happened to be on the tour already as part of DEAD RABBITTS so that worked out nicely as he joined her onstage to start the show. Frontwoman Mixi is not only easy on the eyes but she is a beast on vocals as evidenced by her vocal prowess on such numbers as "Possess Me", "Catch Me When I Fall" and "Immortal". She is also an accomplished guitarist, which certainly makes her the total package. The band also used the tour as a springboard to debut a brand new song titled "Sick Sick Sick" which was a hit with the crowd. Their 9 song set concluded with a one-two punch of the aforementioned "Immortal" and the blistering "Monster" from the debut album going back to 2016. After waiting so long I finally got my STITCHED UP HEART fix.

Setlist:

  • "To The Wolves"
  • "Possess Me"
  • "My Demon"
  • "Lost"
  • "Catch Me When I Fall"
  • "Sick Sick Sick"
  • "Conquer and Divide"
  • "Immortal"
  • "Monster"

Capping off the evening was the Duke of Spook himself, Wednesday 13, who has enjoyed quite a variety of musical projects over his career, from the FRANKENSTEIN DRAG QUEENS FROM PLANET 13 to MURDERDOLLS with the famed late drummer Joey Jordison of SLIPKNOT to outlaw country act BOURBON CROW. For the last 20 years or so he's been recording and touring under the WEDNESDAY 13 moniker and has a brand new studio album Mid Death Crisis coming out in just a few weeks. When your inspiration and look is a combination of Marilyn Manson, Alice Cooper, and KISS you know it's going to be a good time and a punkishly good time delivered, a hodge podge setlist encompassing tracks from his across his career. This tour was also a celebration of the 20th anniversary of WEDNESDAY 13's debut album Transylvania 90210: Songs of Death, Dying, And The Dead and in that spirit we got a heaping helping of that release performed, beginning with "Port Mortem Boredom" and "Look What The Bats Dragged In". The band would go on to perform a whopping 7 songs from the album, those already mentioned and gems such as "I Want You...Dead", "God Is A Lie", "The Ghost Of Vincent Price" and "Bad Things".

Wednesday and the band lit the venue up with horror glam punk vibes, sounding tight and having a blast as Wednesday 13 crooned and screeched his way through their set, displaying just as many different facial expressions as songs they played. Following initial set closer "Bad Things" the band retreated sidestage to freshen up and fix their makeup as the crowd chanted 'one more song'. They returned with a 5-song encore, launching into MURDERDOLLS track "Slit My Wrist". The FRANKENSTEIN DRAG QUEENS "Love At First Fright" was next followed by Wednesday's cover of Billy Idol's "White Wedding" before going back to the MURDERDOLLS once more for "Dead In Hollywood". Of course a WEDNESDAY 13 show would not be complete without the FRANKENSTEIN DRAG QUEENS showstopper, "I Love To Say Fuck", complete with his patented umbrella with a huge middle finger on top and the word 'FUCK' predominantly displayed.

The 'There's No Such Thing As Monsters' tour continues in North America for another month before going overseas in July and early August. It's a spooktacular time so don't miss it when it comes to your town!
