SONS OF APOLLO
MMXX
Inside Out Music
The release of 2017’s Psychotic Symphony and subsequent touring to support that debut gave SONS OF APOLLO an opportunity for the new band to gel and collaborate on more material. The progressive rock supergroup, composed of vocalist Jeff Scott Soto, guitarist Ron “Bumblefoot” Thal, bassist Billy Sheehan, keyboardist Derek Sherinian, and drummer Mike Portnoy, has released a second studio album. Titled MMXX, within its eight tracks are flashes of technical greatness, but MMXX lacks the excitement and soul of its predecessor. “Goodbye Divinity” and “Fall to Ascend” are exceptions--songs that will likely be set list staples. The masterfully-arranged “King of Delusion” showcases Sherinian’s brilliance on the keys as well as Bumblefoot’s deft guitar playing. Soto, a consummate rock vocalist, shines throughout, as do Sheehan and Portnoy, who are an exceptional rhythm duo. Sadly, the droning “New World Today”, clocking in just shy of 16 minutes, could have been scratched and replaced by a better closer.
